Friesland and surrounding area

Friesland is a stunning province with a wealth of natural countryside and its very own identity. It was designated the Netherlands’ most beautiful province by the in 2010 door the Netherlands Cultural Landscape Association (VNC). Friesland is renowned for its sporting events, including the ice-skating marathon known as the Eleven Friesian Cities Tour, Friesian handball (locally known as keatsen), sail racing using shallow-draft craft (skûtsjesilen) and fierljeppen, which is a sport involving the use of a long pole to jump across a body of water. However, the province also has its own Friesian language, flag and national anthem. Friesland has a great deal to offer tourists. Discover the stunning countryside via its waterways or one of the breath-taking cycling or rambling routes. Or immerse yourself in its rich culture by visiting one of the dozen museums, attending a concert by one of the local brass bands or participating in a game of Friesian handball.
